Making AI Answer a Significant Bottleneck in Senior Care

Inspīr Embassy Row, luxury senior assisted living and memory care residence in Washington D.C. set to open in January 2025, has officially announced the implementation of a cutting-edge AI-powered fall prevention technology, called SafelyYou Respond, across its memory care residences. According to certain reports, the stated development comes on the back of positive early results, where the technology was successful in reducing fall-related injuries and emergency room visits among senior living communities. Contextualizing the importance of such a development is a report from Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) that claims one in four Americans, aged 65 and older, experiences a fall each year. To address this risk, Inspīr Embassy Row has partnered with SafelyYou, creator of SafelyYou Respond. Talk about the benefits attached to deploying SafelyYou system on a deeper level, they begin from rapid response times. We get to say so because, during early runs, the technology achieved a median staff response time to resident falls of 90 seconds, marking massive improvement upon the industry average of 40 minutes. Next up, we have the prospect of reduced ER visits. You see, no more than 0.3% of detected falls required an ER visit, versus the industry standard of 23.6%. Joining the same is potential for enhanced monitoring. In essence, 100% of falls in rooms equipped with SafelyYou were witnessed by staff, compared to 93% of falls occurring when residents were alone.

“We’re committed to providing the highest level of care and safety for our residents,” said Tino Popescu, Vice President of Clinical Services. “By implementing SafelyYou’s AI technology at Inspīr Embassy Row, we’re setting a new standard for senior safety in Washington D.C.”

Almost like a ripple effect of what it ultimately promises, the system in question further paves the way for greater independence. By reducing the fear of undetected falls, residents can maintain a more active and independent lifestyle. Given its nature, the technology also presents you with enhanced care planning, something it does through valuable data which the staff can effectively use to identify patterns and adjust care plans in a rather proactive manner. We referred to how the technology can cut down on ER visits, but what we haven’t yet mentioned is the fact that fewer emergency visits can also orchestrate significant cost savings for residents and their families.

Among other benefits, the system unsurprisingly offers greater peace of mind for the patient’s family, helping them feel more secure knowing that help will arrive quickly in the event of a fall. Not just families, the patient themselves stand to preserve their dignity, as they now have to spend less time in potentially uncomfortable situations following a fall.

“The implementation of SafelyYou at Inspīr Embassy Row demonstrates our commitment to innovation in senior care,” said Brian Geyser, Vice President of Enterprise Intelligence. “This technology not only enhances safety but also provides peace of mind for residents and their families, allowing our seniors to live more confidently and independently.”

Making the whole runner even more important is SafelyYou’s wider set of credentials. Founded in 2015, the company is actually a spinout of UC Berkeley’s Artificial Intelligence Research Lab, one of the top five AI research groups in the world. Focused on addressing the crucial issue of resident falls in senior living, since the very beginning, SafelyYou has consistently showcased a positive impact in its mission, reducing falls by 40% and fall-related ER visits by 80%. Beyond that, the company has now branched out to solve senior living’s staffing dilemma with SafelyYou Clarity™, which is an industry-first solution for automatic and accurate care tracking, thus empowering helping operators align the staff with residents’ needs so to improve both operations and quality of care.
